7. Past-
Lefty, moving backwards. Eugenides showing that people never forget or escape the past- people end up where they start. Lefty "grew younger and younger while in actuality he continued to age" (267). Gets to the point where Desdemona is only his sister, not his wife. Winter of 1970- Lefty dies
When Lefty see's Calliope's abnormal behavior in bath house- Calliope blames her self for his stroke- guilt for doing something wrong- similar to Lefty and Desdemona's guilt
Feminine vs. Masculine
Pg 253- Calliope comparing her development with the new cars Milton traded for each year. Car details- noticing these seems more masculine, but in touch with emotions seems more feminine

2. I think that the significance of this scene is to show the beginning of Calliope's confusion. While moving into a new house, named middlesex, she begins to question some of her feelings. She thinks she feels differently than she should towards Clementine and she thinks it is not right so she hides it from her mom. This is the beginning of Calliope's development into Cal. It is interesting that it is intertwined with the confusion of the new house and the new way of living. The house is even called middlesex which is very ironic.
